The Benefits of Core Strengthening for Greater Consistency and Power

The Benefits of Core Strengthening for Greater Consistency and Power

by Dr. Paul Callaway

Integrating golf-specific fitness and conditioning exercises with professional golf instruction can be very beneficial to your game. A key component in most every golfer's customized golf fitness program is the development of a strong core. The core includes a number of muscles in the mid-torso region of the body but the predominant muscle group is the abdominal muscles – upper, lower and transverse. The abdominal muscles play a huge role in the process of developing a powerful, consistent and stress-free golf swing.

One terrific core strengthening exercise I use regularly with golfers is called the 'Belly Burner'. The Belly Burner promotes a golfer's ability to achieve and maintain their optimal spine angle at address and throughout their full golf swing. It also provides the potential for significant increases in swing speed/ power that translates into increased distance when integrated with effective swing re-education.

 Instructions:

  • Kneel on a padded surface and rest both forearms on a Swiss ball.
  • Pull in your lower abdominals and flatten your lower back.
  • As you exhale, slowly roll the ball forward, extending your hips and shoulders equally – as far as possible – until you feel a strong but comfortable abdominal, chest and shoulder muscle contraction, and while maintaining a straight/flat spine.
  • Hold the end position for one full swing visualization, then inhale as you slowly roll the ball and pull your body back to the starting position.
  • Repeat, 1-3 sets of 10-15 repetitions, 2-4 times per week.

Attitude vs Ability: What's More Important?

Attitude vs Ability: What's More Important?
by Dr. Paul Callaway

In the pursuit of performance success on the golf course, I am frequently asked by my golf performance clients, "What's more important? My ability as a golfer ... Or, is it my attitude?"

Well, the answer to this question is very simple and can be confirmed over and over from many examples in the annals of golf history, as well as, in every other sport.  I will answer the question in this simple and direct way, "Attitude is Everything!" When it's all said and done, the golfer with the better attitude will always out-perform the golfer with a poor attitude - even if the poor attitude golfer has a relatively better natural ability to play the game.

Why is this true?

Psychologists tell us that a major source of stress in our life is the "fear of rejection" or "fear of criticism". This fear of rejection manifests itself in an over-concern for the approval or disapproval from our parents, from our golf coach, from our teammates and/or peers. The fear of rejection is often learned in early childhood as the result of our parents, teachers or other authority figures in our lives giving us "conditional love."

Rise Above the Need For Approval
Many parents make the mistake of giving love and approval to their child only when the child does something that they want them to do. Children who grow up with this kind of 'conditional' love, in turn, tend to seek unconditional approval from others all of their lives, and in everything that they do. When children with this 'learned' experience from their environment become adults, this need for approval from their parent is transferred to every other relationship and experience they have - including their interactions with their golf coaches and the mentors that make up their total golf performance team; golf-specific mental coach and fitness training specialist. The adult golfer can then become preoccupied with the opinion of their coaches. This preoccupation can lead to an obsession to perform to some undetermined high standard.

Avoid Type A Behavior
Doctors Rosenman and Friedman, two San Francisco heart specialists, have defined this obsession for performance as "Type A behavior." Experts have concluded that approximately 60% of men and as many as 30% of women are people with Type A behavior.

Don't Burn Yourself Out
This Type A behavior can vary from mild forms to extreme cases. Golfers who are what they call "true Type A's" usually put so much pressure on themselves to perform in order to please their parents, spouses, coaches, and teammates, for example, that they burn themselves out. Not only do they perform way below their true potential as golfers - regardless of their true talent level as golfers - but many end up 'hating' to play golf altogether and quit the game out of total frustration. Worse yet, some golfers, with extreme issues in this area, actually die of heart attacks before the age of 55! This Type A behavior, triggered by conditional love in childhood, is a very serious stress-related phenomenon in the American workplace, and in the world of high-level sports - including golf.

Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do, as a golfer, and in life, to immediately deal with the fear of rejection, criticism and disapproval ... and to improve your attitude for optimal performance both 'on' and 'off' the golf course.

1) Realize and accept that the opinions of others are not important enough for you to feel stressed, unhappy or over concerned about them. Even if they dislike you entirely, it has nothing to do with your own personal worth and value as a person. In other words, the reality is, your golf scores do not define who you really are and what your true value is as a person! Your true 'worth' and value comes from your chosen creator, and can never be determined by any human being - even your parents!

2) Refuse to be over concerned about what you think people are thinking about you. The fact is that most people are not thinking about you at all. They are thinking about about themselves! Relax and get on with your life.

'7' Keys to Energizing Your Results

"Life is 10 percent what you make it, and 90 percent how you take it. "
-- Irving Berlin, American Composer and Lyricist

Energy is a key luck factor. For you to be at the top of your form, to be action oriented, fast moving, and extremely productive, you have to have high levels of energy - both physically and mentally.

For you to be able to take advantage of all the possibilities around you, and to have the continuous enthusiasm that keeps you and others motivated and moving ahead, you have to organize your life so that you feel terrific about yourself most of the time.

1. Eat the Right Foods
The first key to high energy is a proper diet. To perform at your best, you must eat the right foods, in the right balance, and in the right combination. Your diet has an inordinate impact on the amount of energy you have, how well you sleep, your levels of health and fitness, and your performance throughout the day and into the evening. To support your diet, I suggest supplementing with whole food, organic sources of nutritional supplements.  The best source I have found is from Nikken  http://www.nikken.com/product/technology/#kenzenWellness

2. Watch your Weight
The second key to high energy is proper weight. Proper weight is essential for health, happiness, and long life. Being slightly under your ideal weight is best. As they say, you can never be too rich or too thin. If you are not happy with your current level of physical health, you need to set specific goals for yourself for the weeks and months ahead. Having an optimal weight management support plan can also be helpful. The product technologies I use to help my clients achieve their target weight are the Body Balance organic meal replacement shakes from Nikken  http://www.nikken.com/product/technology/#kenzenWellness .

3. Exercise is Essential
The third key to high energy is proper exercise. The best activity for high energy and physical fitness is aerobic exercise. This type of exercise requires that you get your heart rate up into what is called the training zone three times per week. This training zone is about 120 to 160 beats per minute, depending on your age. You then keep it there for at least 20 minutes or more each session.  Power walking with the Nikken Cardiostrides - a specially-designed walking shoe that helps increase your metabolism when used regularly - is what I encourage my clients to do for regular exercise to build energy and control their weight. Info about the Cardiostrides can be found at http://www.nikken.com/product/technology/#kenzenWellness .

4. Get Lots of Rest and Recreation
The fourth key to high energy is proper rest. You need an average of seven to eight hours of sleep each night to be fully rested. You need to take off at least one full day each week during which you don't work at all. You should take regular mini-holidays of two or three days each, every couple of months. You should take one and two week vacations each year when you relax completely and get your mind totally off your work.  Optimal rest and restoration can also be facilitated and enhanced through the Nikken Kenko Sleep Technology http://www.nikken.com/product/technology/#kenzenWellness .

5. Develop a Positive Mental Attitude
The sixth key to high energy is the elimination of negative emotions. This can be the most important thing you do to assure a long and happy life. Your ability to keep your mind on what you want and off of what you don't want will determine your levels of health and happiness more than any other decision you make. Having a mentor that you can consult with, can facilitate and hold you accountable to your daily positive attitude is very helpful. If you ever want to schedule a complimentary consultation to learn more about how to keep your thoughts, feelings and actions on a positive track, please contact me atPaul@CallawayGolfFitness.com .

6. Start a Personal Mental Fitness Program
The seventh key to high energy is for you to go on a 21-day positive mental attitude diet, one day at a time. Resolve that, for the next 21 days, you are going to keep your mind on what you want and keep it off the things you don't want. You are going to think and talk positively and optimistically about your goals, other people, and everything that is going on in your life. This is just one great example of the helpful mechanisms that can keep you on track to energizing your results in life. If you want to learn about many more helpful resources for improved energy and improved results, then contact me for a FREE consultation at Paul@CallawayGolfFitness.com .

7. Become a Personal Powerhouse
The more you practice the health habits we have talked about, the more energy and vitality you will have. The more you keep your conversation focused on your goals and on the things you want, the greater the amount of strength and power you will feel. You will be more alert and aware. You will feel more positive and action oriented in every situation. Remember, to have more positive and energized results, you must first have more positive and energized beliefs. Because beliefs create thoughts, thoughts create feelings, feelings drive behavior/actions and behavior/actions produce our results.

Action Exercise
Resolve to become intensely action oriented from now on; whenever you get a good idea or something needs to be done, move quickly.

'10' Simple Stress Busters

If we didn't have 'stress' in our lives, we would all be living pain-free. We’d also go about our days in a much more joyful and
playful manner, not to mention we’d also be happier, healthier, and simply enjoy life better.

Chronic and severe stress can damage your body and mind, blocking the fluid communication to and from most organs – especially in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the limbic system, the brain’s emotional center.

And, as 'stress' is the opposite of 'ease', even if you have relatively lower levels of stress or 'dis-ease' over long periods of time, the stress levels you do have can eventually produce 'disease'.

So, let me share with you '10' very simple and effective ways to remedy your stress that you can get started on right away. Some of them you may have heard before… others you probably haven’t. But if you begin practicing some of these techniques and making them regular parts of your daily experience, then they will provide you with a happier, healthier, more pain-free life.

1. Laugh More – Research has continually shown that on average, the more a person laughs, the less stressed they are and the longer they live. I recommend looking up clips on YouTube for things that make you laugh, reading comics, watching TV shows which make you giggle, talking to a funny friend, or anything else which helps you laugh more.

2. Exercise – As you exercise your body releases endorphins, often referred to as “happy chemicals,” because they literally melt stress from your body like magic. And no, you don’t have to grunt and groan in order to shake the stress – although you can if that’s what you like to do!

3. Pray/Meditate – Praying to your chosen higher power and/or meditating are some of the most effective long-term stress relievers ever discovered. By making a focused, mindful connection to your creative source, you effectively slow your brain waves from a high beta stage down to a low alpha, that helps to dissolve stress and reduce pain.

4. Breathe Deeply – I’d like you to try something for me. As you’re reading this, become aware of your current stress levels. Think hard about exactly how you’re feeling at this moment. Really think hard about how those emotions make you feel (i.e. are you anxious, have tight muscles, stressed, worried, etc.) and then take 10 very slow, very deep breaths and do the same thing. Feel the difference?

5. Simplify Your Life – Between juggling our family lives, jobs, personal activities and everything else we have going on, sometimes life gets a little crazy. Simplifying your life is much easier than it sounds, and can work wonders. It simply means removing clutter from your house, focusing on 1 task at a time instead of trying to multi-task (which is a huge productivity killer), and getting rid of anything not absolutely necessary.

6. Drink Green Tea – Green tea is packed with something called “theanine” which increases the brain’s output of relaxation-inducing alpha waves and reduces the output of tension-making beta waves. If you’re a tea drinker I’m sure you’ve noticed the calming effect it has on you – and now you know the science behind it!

7. Learn To Forgive – Throughout our lives many things happen which cause us to hold grudges against friends, family, co-workers, etc. Every single time you hold a grudge against someone, that grudge places an extra weight on your own mental tension. Just imagine how many grudge (big OR small) you’ve had over the past 10, 20, 30, 50+ years… and think about how much it may be weighing your emotions down. Learn to forgive and you’ll find your emotional stress – and your pain – begins to slowly fade away into the background.

8. Write A List Of Everything You’re Thankful For – Research has shown that it’s literally impossible to be stressed about something and be thankful for something at the same time. I suggest setting aside 20 minutes once per week and writing down every single thing you’re grateful for in your life. It works wonders.

9. Take A “You” Day – Every once in awhile, we all need a day for ourselves. Away from the kids, the husband, the wife, the friends, the TV, work etc. Go take a walk in the woods, or go to the movies by yourself, or go shopping… whatever it is that you love to do!

10. Eat/Drink Any Of These 10 Foods And Drinks – Blueberries, low-fat or skim milk, oranges, brown rice, green vegetables, dried apricots, turkey, soy, sweet potatoes and water (Nikken PiMag water http://www.nikken.com/product/technology/#piMagWater is the best water quality to promote a healthy, properly hydrated body that I have ever found.) Each of these help our bodies release more happy chemicals into the brain – helping reduce stress by simply eating!

Action Step:
Try implementing just 1 of these 10 stress-busters each week over the next 10 weeks. Each week simply add one more and before you know it you’ll find much of your stress left in the past.

If you have a special 'stress buster' that you'd like to share - or- if you want to talk about how stress is impacting the quality of your life, health and/or performance in some way, please contact me at Paul@CallawayGolfFitness.com or call (630) 567-7572 for a FREE 30-minute consultation.

The Three 'R's of Success

"To grow, you must be willing to let your present and future be totally unlike your past. Your history is not your destiny."
Alan Cohen

It has been my experience working as a physical therapist evaluating injured patients, and as a golf fitness training and performance enhancement specialist consulting with golfers, that the results an individual achieves is highly correlated and extremely predictable relative to the their ability to do three things:
1)   ‘R’elease
2)   ‘R’e-educate
3)   ‘R’ebuild

Let me explain…

The first ‘R’ required to achieve ideal scene, successful results is ‘R’elease. Releasing or ‘letting go’ of the beliefs, fixed ideas, and paradigms that have previously shaped our past identity, behavior and undesirable results is the vital, first step in the process of achieving new and improved results.

One would think that releasing old or habitual thoughts and behaviors that have been producing undesirable results would be simple to do. After all, why would anyone want to keep thinking, feeling and doing things, over and over, that keep providing unpleasant, less profitable outcomes? However, only when it's understood just how deeply seeded these conditioned beliefs are in our subconscious portion of our mind can we then begin the process of planting new seeds of achievement that will eventually grow to become the new and improved results.

The second ‘R’ in success, is ‘R’e-educate. Once we have consciously made the decision to release the strong hold we have on our old beliefs, thoughts and actions so we can open the door to the possibilities of being, doing and having more of what we truly desire, the next critical step in the success formula is to re-educate our subconscious mind with new information. If we want to be better, feel better, and perform better, then we have to choose a mentor – source of information – that can provide us with everything we need to know so we can ‘win’. In other words, go find the people who are achieving the kind of results you want and/or are helping people get the results you want, and ask them for help.  Learn what they are doing to be successful and do exactly what they instruct you to do. If you do, you will begin to move closer to your goals.

The third and final ‘R’ in successful achievement of new and improved results is ‘R’ebuild. Very simply, all this means is, to consistently and persistently, step by step, and with total focus, follow and adhere to the advice provided by your ‘mentors’. The rebuilding process is perhaps the most difficult part of the “three R’s” success formula.  What often happens, as the ‘re-education’ process begins and new or different information comes to us from our mentors, is that we experience new and different thoughts, feel new and different feelings, and do new and different activities. Unfortunately, based on the law of ‘Cause and Effect’ and/or as written in biblical references as “sewing and reaping”, there truly is a “season for sewing” and a “season for reaping” … but never are they in same seasons!

Bottom line, when the immediate results we are intending don’t quickly appear in a time frame that matches our expectations, then our normal response is one of wanting to quit shortly after beginning our “Three R’s” process of change. We have been conditioned to lose focus for what we truly want … our goals and our ideal scene results … and we slip back into our old habits – and our old results! Just like the child that plants a seed in the garden then, hours later, asks, “Why hasn’t the seed sprouted yet?”, and days later, with frustration comments, “That seed is never going to grow!”, we can lose our patience and give up during this ‘rebuilding’ stage. We simply don’t have the developed awareness to fully understand how to see what is not yet visible through our senses. Just like the child who plants the seed, we want the plant … our new and improved results … to immediately appear.

We, however, need to be like the more experienced gardener, who understands and can visualize the beautiful, fruit or flower-bearing plant even before it has sprouted. And knows, from experience, that once planted, and the necessary time and routine care, including nutrients, water, and sunlight are provided, then, and only then, will the plant appear, flower, provide the beauty and nutritious, wonderful tasting fruit that it was intended to produce.

So, there are three R’s in success; 1) ‘R’elease, 2) ‘R’e-educate, and 3) ‘R’ebuild. All three ‘R’s are vital to the success formula with success being the achievement of the results that you truly desire in life.  My patients who are successful at feeling and functioning better, and my golf performance clients who have successfully improved their golf fitness so they can play more consistent golf and reduce injuries when they play have all learned about the three ‘R’s of success and have been able to apply them to achieve the results they wanted.  You too can get the results you want in life if you apply the three ‘R’s of success.

If you’d like to learn more about these success principles and talk about how to set and achieve the goals important in your life, please contact me at Paul@CallawayGolfFitness.com or call me directly at (630) 567-7572 to schedule a FREE 30-minute consultation.

Breathe Cleaner Air

Why care about indoor air?
Even though May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, if you live with either or both conditions … or live with someone who does … it is always a good month to learn more about how our indoor air quality can make a difference in how we breathe and how we feel.

Dr. Neil Schachter, medical director of the Respiratory Care Department of New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center, and one of the nation’s leading authorities on respiratory diseases says, “We spend about 70 percent of our time or more indoors. I don’t think that most people have a good idea about what’s in their household air that might be unsafe for them. Levels of major poolutants can be five to even 100 times greater indoors than outdoors.  And, while the quality of outdoor air has been improved by public awareness and legislation in recent decades, indoor air quality has tracked in the opposite direction. Indoor air is a great environment for microbes and plant materials. It’s a cradle to all sorts of living things that are either irritating or allergenic, like dust mite debris or bacteria or mold, which grow nicely at 68 degrees. And, as we have worked very hard in the past 30 years or so to make our buildings ‘tighter’ and more energy efficient, there’s less of an opportunity for these kinds of airborne particles to leave our homes.”

Schachter says that many asthma- and allergy-related symptoms are often related to microscopic particles that float in the air – these particles can be reduced by using high performance air treatment systems. http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!air-wellness-power-pro

“That’s why products like these can be a help for people with these or other respiratory conditions, Schachter explains. “But, filtering bacteria and other particles is helpful even for healthy people. Germs are carried by particles in the air, for example.

There’s a reason why most common infections we get are respiratory. We breathe this stuff in all the time.”

Of course, Schachter considers “not smoking” as the number one most helpful thing we can do to keep our indoor air clean. “It’s probably the worst thing you can do inside your home, for yourself and others living within it. And in addition to that, helping to reduce particulate and organic material from indoor air through high-level filtration and air system treatment is a very good step.”

It’s in the air – but what is it?
Do you know what’s floating around in your indoor air? Here’s a quick look at five common household air contaminants.

Secondhand smoke – Sometimes called environmental tobacco smoke, it’s the single most hazardous indoor air pollutant found in American homes.  It contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including 200 known poisons and 69 known cancer-causing agents. The only way to avoid the unhealthy effects: Prohibit smoking indoors!

Mold spores – Mold spores are made up of simple, microscopic organisms that are part of our natural environment. Inside our homes, though, it can cause health problems – including allergic reactions and asthma episodes.

Dust mite debris – Dust mites are tiny microscopic animals that thrive in pillows, mattresses, bedding, stuffed toys, carpeting, and upholstered furniture in virtually every home.  They produce debris that can trigger allergic reactions or asthma episodes when inhaled by children or adults who are sensitive to them.

Pet dander – Pet dander is made up of shed animal skin, dried saliva and old skin flakes – a common trigger for allergies and asthma.

Chemical cleaners – Someof the household cleaning products we rely on to remove dust, dirt, bacteria, germs and odors may leave behind harmful chemicals that can also pollute the air and cause potential health problems for our family and pets.
And trust me, that’s just for starters! Learn more about creating a wellness home environment at http://www.nikken.com/wellness-home/.

Find the right filtration and air treatment fit
Even in the cleanest homes, you can see tiny specks floating in the air. These particles can be made of dust, pollen, plant and mold spores, pet dander, lint, and other allergens that may trigger allergy or asthma episodes in sensitive people.

Selecting the right air filtration and treatment system for your home and/or office and following a recommended maintenance schedule can significantly reduce the amount of particles available for you to breathe in your home/office. But how can you select the air treatment system that is right for you?

The truth is that there are many types of air filtration systems.  Some can even do a good job at removing (filtering) various-sized particles from the air. Others don’t do much of anything! And, very few actually treat the air after filtering it by adding important, health-promoting elements like negative ions back into the air for us to breathe.

Here are some basic tips to help you during your selection process:

  • Look for air treatment systems that have multiple filtration stages
1)     Pre-filter/mesh filter combination – The pre-filter and mesh fabric filter remove larger dust particles, mold, pet hair and more. This coarse particulate matter, dirt, pollen, mildew and hair represents a major source of contaminants. The pre-filter/filter combination is made of long-lasting, reusable material and has two important functions. In addition to serving as primary filtration, it traps larger particles before they can reach the ultrafine end-stage filters. This prolongs filter life and helps the entire system to deliver maximum performance.

2)     Neutralizing filter – The neutralizing filter uses a unique, natural means to destroy microscopic contaminants. It contains plant material that attracts and retains these molecules. This organic substance disrupts the irritant properties of these particles, without the use of synthetic chemicals. Scientific tests of the neutralizing filter were conducted that used several identified contaminants. Test results revealed that this filtration stage alone neutralized more than 99% (the upper limit of the test measurement) of these contaminants within half an hour of use. Repeated testing after one hour, two hours, three hours and four hours, continued to show up to 100% inactivation of the irritant particles.

3)     Activated carbon filter –Activated carbon adsorption is a classic, simple, yet highly effective means of reducing contaminants, where matter adheres to the surface of an agent. Charcoal carbon is ideal for adsorption because its irregular shape offers a large surface area. Activated carbon or charcoal is natural carbon that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous carbon that has a surface area of up to 2,000 square meters per gram. In other words, two grams of this material — less than a teaspoon — presents a total surface that is approximately equivalent to a football field. This absorptive capacity makes an activated carbon filter ideal for removing airborne particles.

4)     HEPA filter – The last stage of filtration employs a HEPA filter. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters are an extremely effective air filtering technology. HEPA filters were first developed for use with nuclear reactors. They are now used in medical operating rooms, in high-tech industries (for example, computer chip manufacturing) and other applications where clean, pure air is critically important. Certified HEPA filters meet a very rigorous standard: they remove particles as small as three-tenths of a micrometer. (One micrometer — 1.0 μm — is one-millionth of a meter, or four one-hundred thousandths of an inch.) They accomplish this level of filtration with a verified 99.97% efficiency. Moreover, due to the unique construction characteristics of HEPA technology, particulate matter that is smaller than 0.3 μm — too small for most lab instruments to measure — is filtered with even higher capture rates. Using the diffusion principle, the Nikken Power5 Pro http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!air-wellness-power-pro can intercept particles as minute as 0.1 μm. That is as much as 10 times smaller than the size of staphylococcus bacteria.

  • Look for air treatment systems that produce negative ions – without ozone production!

 1)     Negative Ions Produce Positive Feeling – Cleaner air is only part of what can make your home a better environment. The Nikken Air Wellness Power5 Pro http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!air-wellness-power-pro also enhances the filtered air with a flow of negative ions. Ions are charged atoms or molecules. Negative ions produced by oxygen atoms can help provide a fresh-air feeling. Negative-ion technology is used extensively in air filtration products in Asia. Particularly in Japan, where scientists have long studied the relationship between negative ions in the air and human comfort. High amounts of these ions are found in certain natural settings. They increase in forests and near waterfalls. A walk through a forest or by a mountain stream feels soothing and relaxing — the Japanese regard this as therapy for mental stress, and they call it shinrinyoku, “forest-air breathing.”

2)     Helps balance air conditioning – The amount of negative ions in air can be affected by several factors. Household air conditioners actually reduce the number of negative ions present. A negative-ion generator can help to correct the imbalance.

3)     Widely studied, widely adopted –Research on negative ions and human relaxation is conducted by leading universities and medical institutes and by international technical societies. Nikken applied these principles in developing the Power5 Pro http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!air-wellness-power-pro. Negative ion generation was added to the Power5 Pro to enhance the quality of life you can enjoy in your home. The Power5 Pro features a new, patent-pending system for producing negative ions. Known as clean ion generation, this unique technology operates without an unwanted effect of ion production — ozone.

  • Green Power

The Air Wellness Power5 Pro http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!air-wellness-power-pro is not only beneficial for your indoor environment — it’s also environmentally responsible. This advanced design uses minimal energy.  At its maximum power setting the Power5 Pro consumes only 43 watts of electricity, and at its lowest speed the Power5 Pro operates at 5 watts. Other home air units that cover a comparable room area require twice as much electric power.  The Power5 Pro has been awarded the Energy Star designation from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.  The Energy Star is given only to a room air cleaner that is at least 35% more efficient than a standard model, and saves its owner a minimum of 215 kilowatt-hours per year.  When you use your Power5 Pro, you know that you’re clearing the air inside your home at a lower cost — in your electric bill, and to our ecosystem.

  • Whisper Quiet

The Power5 Pro http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!air-wellness-power-pro is exceptionally quiet, at all settings. Sound engineers measure loudness using the decibel scale. Operating at its highest setting (Turbo), the Power5 Pro is measured at 45.4 decibels. For comparison, the sound level in a quiet library registers 60 dB.  When set in Silent mode, the Power5 Pro is running at 18.1 dB. A person speaking in a low whisper is producing 20 dB.

Your air care checklist
Here’s a handy checklist to help guide you to achieve and maintain healthier air in your home:

Weekly
  • Wash bedding in hot water
  • Damp dust furniture
  • Vacuum carpets, area rugs and floor

Monthly
  • Launder washable curtains
  • Damp dust blinds, window screens, sills and baseboards
  • Clean refrigerator top and drip pan, other kitchen appliances

Open Your Cupboard to Fight Abdominal Fat

There is one unique spice that most everyone already has in their homes and is one of the most overlooked, but healthiest spices in the world ... AND … it can also be considered a "fat burning spice"!

If used daily, it can actually help you win the battle against abdominal fat.

Here are some other benefits of this miracle spice:

  • controls blood sugar levels
  • helps maintain insulin sensitivity
  • a VERY powerful antioxidant
  • may have antibacterial and antifungal properties
  • and dozens of other benefits

So, would you like me unveil to you this ‘miracle’ spice that can help you control abdominal fat?

Well ... believe it or not, go to your cupboard right now and grab it because it's good old tasty cinnamon!

That's right! Although cinnamon does NOT directly increase your fat burning through the increase of your metabolic rate, it CAN actually help you burn off fat potential and help you get leaner in an indirect way.

Here's how...

In addition to cinnamon's dozens of other important health benefits, the main benefit that will help you to get leaner is through it's strong physiological impact on www.nikken.com/shop/details/!jade-greenzymes  controlling blood sugar levelsin your body.

In the 2003 study from the medical journal Diabetes Care, groups were split into people taking 1, 3, or 6 grams of cinnamon per day in capsule form (the equivalent of approximately 1/4th to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon).

The results showed that all 3 amounts of cinnamon reduced fasting blood glucose levels by 18-29% after 40 days.

Cinnamon can also increase insulin sensitivity, which means that it is helping your body to control blood sugar while simultaneously allowing your body to produce less insulin.

As you know, chronically high insulin levels can make your body produce and store more fat.

Two simple ways to use cinnamon in your battle against stubborn belly fat include:

1) Use cinnamon daily in your meals when you can, such as in yogurt or cottage cheese, in smoothies, oatmeal, or anything else you can think of where it would go well.

2) You could use a cinnamon capsule before each of your meals.

These two methods can help you control blood sugar and insulin response from your meals and thereby control your appetite and cravings throughout the day ... hence, helping you to lose body fat more effectively over time.

So, cinnamon is not only a powerful antioxidant that can help you stay youthful longer, it can also help you to control blood sugar and get a leaner body!

Your 'Thoughts' Affect Your Genes

In the past decade, much scientific focus and research has been placed on the 'theory'  that most, if not everything about we look like, how we feel, and how we behave is strongly influenced by our genetic make up.  From various health challenges like diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular problems, skin conditions, obesity and cancer, to sexual preference, personality traits and anti-social behavioral issues like kleptomania, gambling, drug and/or alcohol addictions.

But, there is another viewpoint that has gained much traction over the past several years that suggests that our 'thoughts' and the feelings that are created by those thoughts are what fundamentally produce our results. Books like, Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, and more recently, Rhonda Byrne's The Secret state the case for "The Law of Attraction" being the driving force behind how "we become what we think about".

I know, you are probably thinking, "What's the big deal ... the 'nature' vs 'nurture' debate has been going on forever, right?" And, you'd be very justified in thinking that. However, until recently, the only significant research that supported this discussion one way or the other pointed much more heavily in the balance of our 'nature' (our genetic coding) being responsible for who we are and most everything that we think, feel and do - not the other way around.

So, when I came across the October, 2010 issue of Experience Life Magazine (the monthly wellness magazine produced by Lifetime Fitness) and read the section of Jon Spayde's article, '5 Ways to Upgrade Your Brain' called, Your Thoughts Affect Your Genes, I found it extremely interesting!

Moreover, my healthcare professional mind began to wonder, "If the research supporting this article is really true, then what might the real possibilities be in shifting the current 'chemical/drug/surgery' emphasis on the treatment of diseases to a new paradigm focus on leveraging our 'mind/thoughts/feelings' as the initial and primary approach to preventing and even treating various diseases?"  The possibilities are endless and, to me, extremely exciting!

As Jon Spayde's article is not generally available to non-members of Lifetime Fitness, I wanted to include some of the key points in this blog for your review.

We tend to think of our genetic heritage as a fait accompli. At our conception, our parents handed down whatever genetic legacy they inherited - genes for baldness, tallness, disease or whatever - and now we're are left playing the hand of DNA we were dealt. But, in fact, our genes are open to being influenced throughout lifetime, both by what we do and by what we think, feel and believe.

The new and growing field of "epigenetics" studies extra-cellular factors that influence genetic expression. While you may have heard that genes can be influenced by diet and exercise, many researchers are now exploring the ways that thoughts, feelings and beliefs can exert the same epigenetic effect.  It turns out that the chemicals catalyzed by our mental activity can interact with our genes in a powerful way.  Much like the impacts of diet, exercise and environmental toxins, various thought patterns have been shown to turn certain genes "on" or "off".

The Research

In his book 'The Genie in Your Genes' (Elite Books, 2009), the researcher Dawson Church, PhD, explains the relationship between thoughts and belief patterns and the expression of healing- or disease-related genes.  "Your body reads your mind," Church says.  "Science is discovering that while we have a fixed set of genes in our chromosomes, which of those genes is active has a great deal to do with our subjective experiences, and how we process them."

One recent study conducted at Ohio University demonstrates vividly the effect of mental stress on healing.  Researchers gave married couples small suction blisters on their skin, after which they were instructed to discuss either  a neutral topic or a topic of dispute for half an hour.  Researchers then monitored the production of three wound-repair proteins in the subjects' bodies for the next several weeks, and found that the blisters healed 40 percent slower in those who'd been especially sarcastic, argumentative conversations than those who'd had neutral ones.

Church explains how this works.  The body sends a protein signal to activate the genes associated with wound healing, and those activated genes then code  blank stem cells to create new skin cells to seal the wound.  But when the body's energy is being "sucked up" by the production of stress biochemicals like cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine, like it is during a nasty fight, the signal to your wound-healing genes is significantly weaker, and the repair process slows way down.  By contrast, when the body is not preparing for a perceived threat, its energy stores remain readily available for healing missions.

Why is Matters to You

Just about every body comes equipped with the genetic material it needs to deal optimally with the physical challenges of daily life, and the degree to which you can maintain equilibrium has a real impact on your body's ability to access these genetic resources.  While habits of mind can be challenging to break, deliberate activities like meditation (and/or prayer) can help you refashion your neural pathways to support less reactive thought patterns.

Free from Joint Pain

Lower back pain and other golf related injuries can be treated and prevented through a customized golf fitness training program.Do your joints and muscles ever hurt?

If so, then you'll definitely want to learn more about the real solution I discovered  ... now available to you at:

For over 25 years, my ankles, knees and lower back hurt constantly ... every step of every day! It was 'no fun' at all! I was 40 years old but felt like I was 80! Any time I tried to do anything physical ... take a walk, hit golf balls, exercise ... my joints and muscles hurt - badly!

My problem started when I was a teenager playing sports. I was at basketball ball camp when, on the second day of camp in a scrimmage game, I rolled my left ankle severely! I heard and felt a 'pop'! I tried to keep playing but the pain was so severe and my ankle swelled instantly to the size of a grapefruit. By the next day, I had major bruising all around the outside of my ankle and my participation in camp was over for that week.

Unfortunately, I had registered and pre-paid for another camp the following week. I attended the camp and played all week on my ankle without re-injuring it again BUT I never gave my ankle the proper rest and recovery it needed to completely heal.

The rest is history. My ankle was never the same. I developed chronic instability in that left ankle and, year after year, no matter what I tried, I kept re-spraining my ankle until I was told by my doctors that severe arthritis had set in.

Worse yet, because of how my body was attempting to compensate for the weakness, instability, pain and dysfunction in my left ankle, all my other joints ... right ankle, both knees, and my lower back took a beating. By the time I was in my mid-20's all of those other joints and the surrounding muscles were hurting as well. I was a mess! I felt like my 'physical' life was over!

Now the good news! Fast forward 20 years, after giving up everything except for playing golf (and having to take a cart whenever I played because of my joint pain), at the age of 40 I was introduced to some amazing, 'natural' (non-prescription) wellness technologies by my doctors that totally changed my life forever.

There were a number of wellness products that were suggested to me at the time so I tried them as recommended.  After all ... what did I have to lose?  I hurt every day, I couldn't even take a walk with my family without hurting, and I had tried everything I knew of to feel better up to then - but nothing had really helped!

What I discovered was that these products were extremely safe, so simple to use, and highly effective when used properly and consistently over time. In just 3 weeks I was feeling much better!  And, in 3-4 months, my joint problems were totally GONE!

I was amazed at how I felt!  My ankles and feet, my knees and my lower back all felt so much better. I could stand, walk, and play golf again ... I could even walk 18 holes and play multiple rounds per week for the first time in years without any discomfort! My joint range of motion, flexibility, strength, balance and total function all improved. It seemed too good to be true!

For several months, I kept expecting my symptoms and dysfunction to all come back again as it had before with other short-term remedies that only addressed the symptoms. But this new approach went directly to the 'source' of the problem. And, now 14 years later, I still have no joint-related challenges!

So, if you are hurting -or- if you know of someone who hurts, please do yourself/them a big, BIG favor and learn more about what could just just turn out to be the best decision you ever made for your joints...http://www.nikken.com/shop/details/!kenzen-joint

After all, what do you have to lose ... but the quality of the rest of your life?
