How to Play your Best Golf After 40

How to Play Your Best Golf After 40!
by Dr. Paul Callaway

Gary Player has been an advocate for staying fit as a golfer his entire career. But now that he’s well past 40 years old, he continues to keep his golf body in shape to maximize his performance, reduce injuries and enjoy the game to the fullest.

If you’re a golfer over 40, you too should understand the benefits of improving your golf-specific fitness. As the former Director of Physical Therapy and Golf Fitness on the PGA Tour, I have always believed that our ‘body’ was the most important piece of golf equipment.

Without proper golf-specific fitness and body structure, we cannot achieve a consistent golf swing function – and we are more susceptible to golf-related injuries … especially as we reach 40 years and older!

When evaluating golfers, I have found that the majority of senior golfers have tremendous losses of posture, balance, flexibility, and strength which contributes to a significant reduction in distance, accuracy and consistency.

What the Pro Players are Doing

After helping to start the PGA Tour mobile fitness and treatment center back in the 1980’s, I was also on the ground floor of launching a similar program for the senior players on the Champions Tour. Back then, the focus was mostly on treating and rehabbing the players' chronic injuries. But now, the focus is much more on injury prevention and performance enhancement – getting the most out of their bodies for optimal and safe golf. There is a lot of money still to be won by the 'over 50' gang on the Champions Tour so most every player out there has specific programs addressing their flexibility, strength and conditioning for golf.

In fact, Tom Kite, a regular client of mine on the PGA Tour, has done several segments on the Golf Channel demonstrating showing some of his golf exercises, and 41 year-old, Jim Furyk, can now be seen doing commercials during regular golf broadcasts promoting the importance of golf fitness at any age.

The Importance of Physical Training for Golfers Over 40

If you lack, posture, balance, strength, flexibility or conditioning – any of the essential ‘physical’ performance factors for playing effective golf, then you will lose measureable performance potential in ball striking consistency, accuracy, and distance – all key elements for total scoring. A common complaint by many senior golfers is their loss of strength and distance on the course. Weak muscles don’t fire as fast which slows down clubhead speed and ultimately your distance. Stronger golf muscles also protect your body from injury.

Moreover, many older golfers experience pain of some sort when they play or have an injury that prevents them from playing altogether.  Designing a golf-specific strengthening program can definitely improve driving distance and reduce injuries, allowing you to play pain-free golf for many years to come.

Right up there with strength, however, is flexibility.  Muscles and connective tissue called ‘fascia’ begin to lose essential elasticity and can become fragile. When this happens, due to dehydration, inactivity and/or micro/macro trauma over the years, muscles lose their ability to stretch.  Senior golfers with this problem can’t complete a full backswing and/or follow through. The resultant stress forces pull on their spine creating low back and upper back pain and severely decrease swing power and consistency. Get

Your Fitness Training Program Started the Right Way

One of the biggest problems I address with senior golfers when they start exercising is they get all excited about starting a fitness program and jump right in without any professional support and go at it way to hard and fast. Even when they hire a trainer, they don’t get properly evaluated and often do the wrong things for them, they do too much, too soon, and get sore – even injured! Discouragement and quitting the program, almost before it started, often follows. All avoidable!

Simply put, the sooner a golfer locates a golf-specific fitness specialist and schedules a comprehensive golf fitness and performance evaluation the better – especially if they are over 40!

Getting evaluated should always be the FIRST STEP before jumping into a fitness program. Once your individual needs are identified, then and only then can a golf-specific and customized fitness training program aimed at helping all facets of your physical conditioning needs be addresses – safely and effectively!

I know many of you might be thinking, “Do I really need all of that”!  Well, let me answer you with this … In all areas in life, if you want to get better results, you will have to do something differently than what you are already doing.  And, if you want to get really improved results, you will want to check out what the ‘best’ in the business are doing – then do what they are doing! Right?

In golf today, every top level senior golfer has a customized golf fitness training program that fully integrates with their golf instruction and mental training aspects of their total performance plan. It’s just the right thing to do!

Stop Golfer's Back Pain Forever!

Lower back pain and other golf related injuries can be treated and prevented through a customized golf fitness training program.Year after year, the #1 injury in golf is to the lower back. As frequent as injuries are to golfer's shoulders, elbows, necks and hips, golf injuries to the lower back still reign #1 ... by a mile!

There are many theories to why so many golfers continue to hurt their lower backs. Some experts blame poor swing mechanics and technique, some suggest tight hamstrings and weak abdominal muscles are the cause, while others point their finger at the game itself ... just too much bending and twisting for how our body is designed!

While any or all of these and other factors seem reasonable and most certainly could be contributing to low back injuries in golfers, there is one other major cause that, in my nearly 30 years working as a physical therapist www.CallawayGolfFitness.com specializing in the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of golf-related injuries, that is most often missed.  And, if corrected, can permanently stop golfer's back pain - FOREVER!

Most golfers who suffer from low back pain, regardless of their medical diagnosis, are 'shocked' to find out that there is such a simple and permanent solution to their pain. In fact, in most cases, it's so simple to correct that I can't believe more golf-fitness specialists and medical practitioners are not aware of it.

So what is this common problem to golfer's low back pain? And, how is the problem so easily fixed? Well, here's the answer ...

Over 90% of the golfers I have the opportunity to evaluate, regardless of age, levels of golf experience and/or skill, have muscle imbalances (combinations of muscle and connective tissue tightness and weakness) throughout the key muscle groups in their 'core'. Their foundational muscles in the hips, pelvis, spine, torso and shoulders are not 'balanced'.

Therefore, just like the old-fashioned camping tents that used a center pole to keep the top of the tent up, if one or more of the 'core' muscles (tent ropes) of a golfer's body is pulling on the spine (tent center pole) unequally, then the spine (center pole) and the whole body (tent) would be 'unstable' and lean in the direction of the greatest pull.

Moreover, as the law of 'Structure governs 'Function' establishes that the degree of 'function' of any physical object is dependent upon its 'structure', then, in this state of structural instability, even a relatively normal stress experienced within a golfer's body... a golf swing (wind blowing on the tent) ... could cause it to dysfunction (i.e. poor golf swing mechanics) ... or even worse, become injured (collapse the tent)!

This is exactly what happens with most golfers who develop lower back pain. They all have structural imbalances that cause one or more postural asymmetries. And, these asymmetries in their pelvis and spine regions cause movement dysfunction when they play golf creating stress in the lower back that eventually causes strain, injury and pain. All preventable ... if you know how!

The most commonly-evaluated postural asymmetry in golfers is called a 'pelvic torsion'. Simply stated, their pelvis is slightly twisted so they have the appearance of one leg looking a bit longer than the other.

To see an example of what I'm talking about, visit http://paulcallaway.vpweb.com/MyApproach.html. You will see a how a golfer's standing posture directly impacts their address posture and how their imbalanced address posture prevents their 'ideal' golf swing.

Typically, this 'torsion' is caused by muscle imbalances the golfer develops from the the stresses and de-conditioning experienced with every day life - without the techniques necessary to effectively 're-balance' the golfer's body and prevent injury. Once identified through the proper initial evaluation, then the simple, corrective exercises and treatment techniques can be performed that will eliminate the torsion, reduce the postural stress and prevent further swing compensations and injury.

In my experience, these corrections can be made for most golfers in one week or less. In some more difficult or complex cases, it may take up to one month. This is quite rare, however, as most golfers are feeling and functioning much better in a few short days when they apply the proper 'releasing', 're-education' and 'rebuilding' exercises http://paulcallaway.vpweb.com/MyApproach.html and treatment techniques I provide for them.

Therefore, if you really would like to end your lower back pain problems forever, I suggest that you contact a golf-specific health and fitness professional www.CallawayGolfFitness.com who can properly evaluate your posture and full body structure, and provide you with the quick and easy corrective techniques to feel and function better.

Trust me! This could be the most important and helpful thing you'll ever do for your back and for your game!
